Kotoshogiku got the win in this last sumo tournament, the first Japanese winner in ten years. He is a cool guy and deserves it. Here he is celebrating with heya mate Kotoyuki in an Audi, that’s about 700 to 800 pounds on the back there.

I need to find out how I can watch Sumo again here in the states. Way back, before the internet was used for video, a group of us would get together for dinner and watch videotaped recordings off of the local UHF Japanese channel. Good times.
A few years ago I thought I saw some matches on P2P file sharing, but the files were huge and not all days were included which made watching the whole thing quite a challenge. I’m sure there has to be some sort of streaming option available, but I haven’t looked into it as much as I should.

Well on Youtube my buddy Kintamayama (Moti) has a channel and does a quick video, less than perfect video but he types funny things. Jason’s Sumo channel on Youtube does 1080 video filmed from a 1080 TV but he doesn’t do all the upper division matches each day, just the top ones. I like to see all of them and even Juryo so I watch Kintamayama and then Jasons if I want to see a good one in 1080.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Now I’m really looking forward to the next basho, whenever that might be, but I’m pretty certain I’ll be able to find that info with the provided resources.

Duh. YouTube - of course. I guess I need to get my sumo viewing habits out of the 1998 mindset I’ve been stuck in for the past 18 years...

This and the last basho were damn good. Hakuho broke the all time yusho record this year too.

I’m going to have to do a bit of research into the wrestlers themselves as all of the names are going to be new to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are active wrestlers that are relatives or descendants of wrestlers I watched in the ‘90s - Asashoryu, Dejima, Tokanohana, Wakanohana, Akebono, Musashimaru, etc.

No relatives, the islanders are all gone Mongolians took over. Kyokutenho retired recently. Loved him. Aminishiki is still henkaing his way to some wins. There is an Egyptian although he’s injured this last basho. Ichinojo is a Mongolian kid at 470lbs, he is having a dip right now, might be injured and not teling. I wish I could see the last few years for the first time again.
